چکیده

This paper focuses on productivity growth differentials between manufacturing and services, deindustrialization, and changes in the real exchange rate. Using a Ricardian trade model with a continuum of goods that introduces nontraded services, the paper investigates these interrelationships. The main results are as follows: (i) if deindustrialization proceeds in both home and foreign countries, then the ratio of home manufacturing employment share to foreign manufacturing employment share and the real exchange rate move in the same direction; (ii) even if the productivity growth differential in the home country is greater than that in the foreign county, the extent of deindustrialization in the home country is not necessarily larger than that in the foreing country. On the contrary, it is possible that the foreign deindustrialization exceeds the home deindustrialization; and (iii) even if the productivity growth differential in the home country is greater than that in the foreign county, the real exchange rate of the home country can depreciate contrary to the expectaion of the Balassa-Samuelson effect.

The Role of Productivity in Economic Growth and Equilibrium

This study reexamines the evidence for the Balassa-Samuelson effect for the 1985-2007 period. Cointegrating relationships between the real exchange rate and productivity, real price of oil and government spending are estimated using the Johansen and Stock-Watson procedures. The findings show that for each percentage point in the US-Euro area productivity differential there is a three percentage...

Real currency appreciation in accession countries: Balassa-Samuelson and investment demand

The Balassa-Samuelson effect is usually seen as the prime explanation of the continuous real appreciation of central and east European (CEE) transition countries' currencies against their western counterparts. The response of a small country's real exchange rate to various shocks is derived in a simple model. It is shown that productivity shocks work not only through a Balassa-type supply chann...

Productivity, Tradability, and the Great Divergence * Davis. We Thank David Jacks and Janine Flathmann for Excellent Research Assistance. for Helpful Comments We Thank

For the first-generation models of very long-run growth, empirical success has been mixed. As growth theory now moves beyond one-sector, one-country models, the “industrial revolution” is typically mapped onto a modern-traditional goods dichotomy with differential productivity in rich and poor countries. We argue for the usefulness of an alternative framework, where goods are differentiated by ...

roductivity and Exchange Rate Dynamics: Supporting the Harrod- Balassa-Samuelson Hypothesis through an ‘Errors in Variables’ Analysis

Standard tests of the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson (HBS) hypothesis treat productivity levels in and across countries as fixed and observable, and offer little empirical support for the hypothesis. If productivity follows a jump-diffusion process, these standard tests will generate biased estimates, measuring productivity levels with error. This paper instead proposes an ‘errors in variables’ appro...
